Phase coherence length and quantum interference patterns at step edges

The accepted approximation used to describe quantum interference patterns at steps is shown to be incorrect. As a result, electron lifetimes determined using it are in error by a factor 2.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur

Design, fabrication and testing of porous tungsten vaporizers for mercury ion thrusters

The dispersions in the characteristics, performance and reliability of vaporizers for early model 30-cm thrusters were investigated. The purpose of the paper is to explore the findings and to discuss the approaches that were taken to reduce the observed dispersion and present the results of a program which validated those approaches. The information that is presented includes porous tungsten materials specifications, a discussion of assembly procedures, and a description of a test program which screens both material and fabrication processes. There are five appendices providing additional detail in the areas of vaporizer contamination, nitrogen flow testing, bubble testing, porosimeter testing, and mercury purity. Four neutralizers, seven cathodes and five main vaporizers were successfully fabricated, tested, and operated on thrusters. Performance data from those devices is presented and indicates extremely repeatable results from using the design and fabrication procedures

    Surface-State Localization at Adatoms

Low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy of magnetic and non-magnetic metal atoms on Ag(111) and on Cu(111) surfaces reveals the existence of a common electronic resonance at an energy below the binding energies of the surface states. Using an extended Newns-Anderson model, we assign this resonance to an adsorbate-induced bound state, split off from the bottom of the surface-state band, and broadened by the interaction with bulk states. A lineshape analysis of the bound state indicates that native adatoms decrease the surface-state lifetime, while a cobalt adatom causes no significant change.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Further observations of protons resulting from the decay of neutrons ejected by solar flares

    Get PDF
The solar flare of 1984 April 24 produced a large gamma ray fluence with energy 2MeV. The time profile of the interplanetary flux from this flare indicates the presence of decaying solar neutrons. This makes a total of three neutron flares so far observed by this method. The three flares are used to place constraints on the fluence and spectra of neutrons emitted by the Sun

Analyzing Meaning - Second corrected and slightly revised edition

    Get PDF
This book provides an introduction to the study of meaning in human language, from a linguistic perspective. It covers a fairly broad range of topics, including lexical semantics, compositional semantics, and pragmatics. The chapters are organized into six units: (1) Foundational concepts; (2) Word meanings; (3) Implicature (including indirect speech acts); (4) Compositional semantics; (5) Modals, conditionals, and causation; (6) Tense & aspect. Most of the chapters include exercises which can be used for class discussion and/or homework assignments, and each chapter contains references for additional reading on the topics covered. As the title indicates, this book is truly an INTRODUCTION: it provides a solid foundation which will prepare students to take more advanced and specialized courses in semantics and/or pragmatics
